It has been almost a month since the tsunami of Covid19\u2019s second wave hit our country. The sudden, brutal and merciless attack of this wave has gravely impacted the healthcare system. The demand and supply mismatch has been so sudden that there has been almost no time to react. It is an unprecedented and unimaginable situation and has been delivering severe blows from all sides.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">It is a TEST of LEADERSHIP in CRISIS.<\/p>\n<div class=\"main-content-inner-blog-custom\">\n<p>\nCrisis usually has some unique characteristics:\n<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>It throws up unfamiliar challenges<\/li>\n<li>Depletes resources at a rapid pace and doesn\u2019t give time to plan<\/li>\n<li>Drains everyone strength due to fear, anxiety and stress<\/li>\n<li>Takes away the ability to think on one\u2019s feet<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>When it\u2019s \u2018business as usual\u2019, we tend to project situations as being better than what the reality is. However, during crisis, one has to confront the reality.<\/p>\n<p>One is suddenly thrown from a \u2018Known-Known\u2019 into an \u2018Unknown-Unknown\u2019 zone. The skills required in \u2018Unknown-Unknown\u2019 are quite different \u2013 there is a need to quickly invent\/discover, experiment, apply and recalibrate. The luxury of time doesn\u2019t exist.<\/p>\n<p>Being in a \u2018Known-Known\u2019 position tests management skills while in \u2018Unknown-Unknown\u2019 tests and builds leadership skills.<\/p>\n<p>The current situation of healthcare leaders reminds me of the inspiring story of Ernest Shackleton and how he led his crew to survival once their ship got stuck in ice. It is a story about leadership in crisis.<\/p>\n<p>A Few Lessons from his story:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>He managed himself well: mentally, emotionally and physically.<\/li>\n<li>He realized that the path is long and arduous.<\/li>\n<li>He realized that the mission had changed \u2013 from \u2018exploration\u2019 to \u2018survival\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>He kept his men believing in themselves and their ability.<\/li>\n<li>He never let his team know of his inner fears.<\/li>\n<li>He was constantly vigilant for any break in his team\u2019s morale.<\/li>\n<li>He celebrated his team\u2019s achievements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&amp; many more\u2026\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ll leaders in healthcare organizations are undergoing an experience of their life time.
